鲁益师（C.S. Lewis）1898年出生在北爱尔兰的新教家庭，但在15岁时成为无神论者，后来任教于牛津大学时认识了天主教徒、《魔戒》作者J·R·R·托尔金，因彼此交往密切，便逐渐受其影响而动摇。

根据鲁益师的自述，其实在重回信仰怀抱前，他就像是一个放荡不羁的浪子，死命的挣扎，内心愤恨，目露凶光，只想找机会看能不能逃走。直到1931年，他和托尔金及另一名友人彻夜详谈后，鲁益师才决志信主，加入英国圣公会。

鲁益师的著作甚多，《纳尼亚传奇》就是以圣经为灵感的儿童故事集，但他影响基督徒最深最广的作品则是《返璞归真》。
